We are pleased to share the publication of “Rafts of Change: Microbial and Functional Dynamics in Simulated Sargassum Strandings” on the April cover of Applied and Environmental Microbiology. In this study, researchers used integrated metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses to investigate how native microbial communities break down Sargassum, a brown seaweed whose massive blooms and coastal strandings have become a growing environmental and economic challenge across the Atlantic and Caribbean. The team identified a diverse array of carbohydrate-active enzymes involved in degrading key seaweed polysaccharides, including alginate, fucoidan, cellulose, and laminarin, providing a detailed view of the microbial processes that drive Sargassum decomposition.
The findings reveal how microbial competition, viral interactions, substrate availability, and arsenic detoxification shape community dynamics throughout the degradation process. By uncovering the metabolic strategies used by microorganisms to utilize Sargassum biomass, the research advances our understanding of coastal microbial ecosystems while highlighting new opportunities to convert this abundant and underutilized resource into valuable bioproducts.
